Daniel Hubbarde is a super talented teenager from Toronto, Canada. While most 18 year olds are worrying about graduating high school, Daniel is already creating illustrations and designs that is garnering attention from the likes of Hollywood legends like Jim Carrey. After seeing his amazing art on my feed, I knew I had to reach out for an interview.
While portraits are currently his focus, Daniel creates all type of art and has even designed some clothing in the past. Here is what Daniel Hubbarde (art name ‘Hubbz’) had to say about his artistic inspirations, favorite tools to work with, and where he sees himself in five years:
How long have you been into art and design?
Daniel: I’ve had a passion for art for as long as I can remember, I’d say I started drawing around the age of 5.
You are only 18 years old. How did you become so talented so quickly?
Daniel: Fortunately, I had a pretty good idea that this was something I wanted to do for a living at a very young age. The many hours I spent creating art throughout my childhood is a big reason I’m where I am today.
What are your favorite designing tools of choice?
Daniel: With the majority of my art I like using a combination of traditional and digital mediums. I prefer sketching with pencil and paper, I take photos of my sketches and end up coloring them digitally using procreate on my iPad.
Who are some of your art inspirations? People you look up to.
Daniel: Some of my art inspirations include Humberto Ramos, Frank Kozik, and Todd McFarlane. There are quite a few artists I look up to, and I’m thankful I’ve gotten the chance to meet some of them and receive advice.
You are big on portraits. Is that your favorite type of art to do?
Daniel: At the moment it’s something I really enjoy doing. Back in May, I illustrated my first cartoon portrait of Travis Scott. At the time I had no intentions of creating more but once I saw the reaction it got I thought otherwise. Now, in the past 4 months I’ve illustrated over 30 portraits, don’t plan on stopping quite yet.
How does it feel to have a Hollywood legend like Jim Carrey retweet and compliment your art?
Daniel: It’s definitely an amazing feeling, still very surreal. The ultimate goal with all my portraits is getting them noticed by the celebrities I drew, and having someone like Jim Carrey compliment my work is unbelievable.
Do you see yourself creating a clothing brand in the near future or is fashion out of the picture for you?
Daniel: I’d say it isn’t totally out of the question, I have designed some clothing in the past and it might be something I’d enjoy doing more of in the future.
Where do you see your designing career in five years?
Daniel: Five years from now I hope to be working with prominent musical artists, creating cover art, designing merchandise, whatever it may be. Until then, I will continue to create art and hope that it will get noticed by the right people.
What advice would you give to aspiring artists who are trying to improve their skills?
Daniel: As cliche as it sounds, practice, the more you do something the better you get at it. Even if it means sketching for a few minutes every day, you’ll start seeing improvement in your work very quickly. Start by focusing on the areas you struggle with, watch tutorials, and invest in the right materials. ♦
