Designer Spotlight: ONLYMY2CENTS

ONLYMY2CENTS Interview

@onlymy2cents

A true artist creates no matter what the medium or outlet is. Such seems to be the case with JR Salas aka ONLYMY2CENTS who seems to express his artistic vision on many different platforms. From his own YouTube channel to apparel collections to custom coasters, JR Salas does it all. I had an opportunity to interview the rising artist/designer on his artist origin name, inspirations, and where he sees himself in five years.

Here is what he had to say:

How long have you been into art and design?

ONLYMY2CENTS: I started taking it serious in 2012. I told myself I wanted to get sponsored since at the time I couldn’t afford quality art supplies, in 2 years I got sponsored by Copic Marker, Strathmore Paper, Koh-I-Noor and Sakura of America.

What are your favorite designing tools of choice?

ONLYMY2CENTS: iPad with Procreate and Wacom with Photoshop.

Who are some of your art and fashion inspirations? People you look up to.

ONLYMY2CENTS: I feel as an artist I’m a bigger fan of other artists since I know how much time and work they must have put in. Some of the ones that inspire me are OG Slick, Paper Frank, Club Bum, SetFree, Woes, JerkFace and the list goes on, but these are some I would like to share for y’all to follow.

What is the origin behind your designer name “ONLYMY2CENTS”?

ONLYMY2CENTS: The name comes from being myself. I draw for my own therapy, I draw whatever I feel like drawing and it’s all about self preserving my art without outside redirection or boundaries.

“A rose doesn’t change the way it grows if there is one person looking at it or 1000.” -Onlymy2cents

What are some of your personal favorite pieces you’ve done?

ONLYMY2CENTS: Groot was one of my favorites since it was all done freehand with Copic markers. Few others are some of the first launched Off-White shoes. I had them being taken down from People Magazine because Nike thought it was an actual picture, I took that as a compliment.

How long have you been designing clothes?

ONLYMY2CENTS: Five years this past November. Starting with a screen press in a spare bedroom and then progressed to sublimation and now DTG. I am trying to in house all production from stickers, coaster to shirts and aluminum prints.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

ONLYMY2CENTS: I run everything myself so I know I wear many hats so for me to be able to comfortably do that is to attain financial freedom. That is my goal this year, next year and every year after. Once attained I will enjoy life as I would like to.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists who are trying to improve their skills or grow their brand?

ONLYMY2CENTS: No one owes you anything, no one is entitled to support you. You have to want it bad enough to believe in yourself even when you don’t. Learn the industry you want to go into see how you fit in, plan and execute everyday. Get yours. ♦
