Attending prom is one of the highlights of any high school social calendar. In the United States, almost 49% of the population has attended prom. That being said, 2020 is slowly coming to an end with many students not sure if prom 2021 will take place.
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many schools remain closed. There’s currently a slow return to schools and students are wondering what will happen to prom 2021? It’s been a disappointing year for many who are looking forward to this rite of passage.
Still, all is not lost as prom 2021 looms. Plans are underway in many schools that don’t want to cancel the event for the coming year.
Some schools are open, and students are physically back in class despite challenges with the pandemic. Most students attend class, but many school events remain unavailable. Most schools find it easier to control students in classes, but find it a little more challenging to control students during school events.
Nonetheless, some high schools across the country are as back to normal as possible. Here is the first day of the 2020-2021 academic calendar at North Paulding High School in Georgia:

The question now on many of the student’s minds is will prom 2021 happen? The pandemic is still rife in the country and social distancing is highly emphasized. However, if the curve is flattened in 2021 then students might attend prom. That being said, prom night is expected to be a little different from what they’re used to.
Social distancing measures will mean having the event in larger spaces or outdoors. For those schools that won’t be open, virtual prom parties is the answer. This is also a possibility for schools that have already opened their doors for learning. Both the schools and parents are not willing to risk an outbreak of COVID-19 among the students.
The norm for prom means the usual trappings of gorgeous venues, limo rides, and formal dressings. Students prepare for this event all year long and come to enjoy dancing with their chosen partners. It is a special time. However, prom 2021 will be different for schools that have yet to reopen.
Some schools are busy putting systems in place to host virtual prom parties for their students. The schools find that hosting virtual proms may be a better solution than cancelling the event for the 2nd year in a row. Students will use their computers and smartphones to connect to the virtual event. The good news is many of the teachers and prom sponsors are on board with this concept.
It might not be what the students truly want but it is better than nothing. Students can dress up for the prom party and even have small parties at home with those close to them.
While virtual prom is a good idea, it will not be as memorable for students. Some students from the class of 2021 are getting creative ideas from those of class of 2020. For prom 2020, many students would set up prom rooms in their homes and get their family members to attend the bash. This is yet another great idea for 2021.
One room can be set up like a prom venue with all the decoration. Family members get to dress up, share a fancy meal, and dance the night away and of course, take lots of pictures. Watch an at-home prom 2020 edition:
In 2021, attending prom won’t be the same for many students. The good news is, both the parents and the schools recognize the importance of prom and are willing to put in some effort to make some type of version of prom to happen. Though some of the proposed versions of prom will probably suck, the effort is much appreciated.
While nothing is yet determined, if you are already attending in-person classes at your high school, expect prom 2021 to happen. If your state is still in lockdown and having virtual classes…then you should start mentally preparing for a virtual prom in 2021.
