Fila has made a resurgence in the past few years. A brand that had its heyday back in the 1970s-80s, is back with a vengeance. After going decades without any sort of relevancy, Fila has made a comeback and can now be seen at some of your most popular retail stores such as PacSun and Urban Outfitters. But despite the fact that Fila’s popularity has drastically increased over the past few years, Fila is still considered a ‘wack’ brand by many. Why is a brand that has such a rich history dating all the way back to 1911 so hated today?
Fila Is Seen as a Try-Hard Brand
If you are wearing Fila, most people see this as a try-hard attempt to be different and stylish. People don’t like try-hards because they feel you aren’t being yourself and are trying too hard to impress others. With so many great brands out at the moment such as Nike, Adidas, Yeezy, Champion, Supreme, Palace, and Anti Social Social Club…why on Earth would you want to wear Fila? Only if you are trying too hard to stand out.
Viral Memes
Many memes bashing Fila have gone viral. If millions of people are laughing at a particular brand, you’d be a little reckless and foolish to think that brand will be perceived as cool. Therefore, Fila has been a victim of group think thanks to viral memes that have bashed the brand and called it ugly. People see memes bashing Fila which in turn encourages them to bash Fila as well.
Its Ugly
Every brand has some ugly designs. For as great as Nike is, not all of their designs have been awesome. As designers, sometimes you make a design that just didn’t hit the mark. Fila seems to have a lot of designs that don’t hit the mark. Fila’s bright colors sometimes just don’t complement its bulky logo and plain designs. Their bucket hats seem to look fine, but their shoes is another story. Fila’s designs sometimes are just plain ugly and god don’t love ugly.
Lack of Celebrity Endorsements
Not one single person of true influence rocks Fila. If Travis Scott would wear Fila, best believe Fila would be the new wave. Unfortunately, not one major celebrity has endorsed Fila. The only ‘influencers’ that have been seen wearing Fila are your local Instagram influencers with a couple thousand followers that got paid to wear it. With no true person of influence reppin’ and protecting the Fila brand, it is easy to bash.
Just Because
Sometimes, as a society we just need someone to pick on. Just like the new wave of rappers like to pick on Russ, in fashion we like to pick on Fila. Is there a legitimate particular as to why Russ and Fila should be picked on? Not really, but we just need someone to bully sometimes and Fila with their chunky Disruptor shoes seem like the perfect Target.
