Does the name Wassim Slaiby ring any bells? Wassim is better known by Sal, or Sal XO and is a Lebanese-Canadian entrepreneur that is the CEO of XO Records and manager of international recording artists like The Weeknd, Doja Cat, Metro Boomin, and many others.
Though he is living a very comfortable life now, it wasn’t always that way for Sal XO. At the age of 15 he escaped Lebanon on his own fleeing the Lebanese Civil War and made it to Montreal, Canada. Shortly after becoming a refugee in Canada, he moved to Ottawa where he met the rapper known as Belly and was inspired to get into the music business.
His music career started in 2002 when he co-founded Capital Prophets Records (CP Music Group). The record company had moderate success with artists Belly and the singer known as Massari but his career really took off in 2012 when he began managing The Weeknd. A few years later he became CEO of The Weeknd’s label, XO. While developing his talent roster, he always achieved to not only manage talented singers/rappers, but also manage extremely popular producers like London On Da Track and Metro Boomin. Having both singers and producers in house helped everyone involved reach higher levels in their careers.
Sal XO continued to expand his career by joining the steaming service, Anghami, as head of international partnerships and joining the advisory board of Global Citizen. Throughout the last 20 years he has managed to work for or partnered with Universal Music Group, LiveNation Entertainment, Republic Records, Triller, RCA, Warner Music Group, BMG, Atlantic Records, and dozens of other huge music companies.
Although Sal XO is extremely busy with all of those endeavors, he still made time to assist in the construction of the Suubi Hospital in Uganda. Also, during the time of the California wildfires in 2018 he used his social media following to boost donations to the Los Angeles Fire Department and raised funds to help relief for the 2020 Beirut explosions.
It is great to see someone who started life in a really bad situation to not only work his way to success, but is also really focused on giving back. Wassim has been able to develop extremely successful careers for numerous artists and all the teams that support those artists. He has been able to make a ton of money in his career and instead of only worrying about himself, he continues to raise money for local causes as well as working to end extreme poverty with Global Citizens.
