What is Quibi? Everything to Know About the Quibi App

Quibi App Streaming ServiceWhat is Quibi?

Got a few minutes to find out what Quibi is? Quibi is just that, streaming shows that only take a few minutes to watch. Quibi is one the latest phone streaming services that just got released on April 6 and offers “Quick bites. Big stories.” The name comes from a mash-up of the words “quick” and “bites.” The concept of Quibi is to fill up our shorter free times that we have in our day as opposed to binge watching your favorite show for hours.

The Quibi app consists of both scripted and unscripted content that comes in 10 minute episodes or less. Quibi is not a Netflix alternative, but something completely different. Rather than releasing entire seasons or series to fill up your evening/weekend binging hours of content released weekly, Quibi is doing it daily. That’s right, Quibi will be releasing daily content. This is a sure way to keep people from running out of content to watch. Streaming services are becoming increasingly crowded and new businesses in this area need to stand out to draw attention to their respective platform.

What Separates Quibi From Other Streaming Services?

Quibi is a mobile only subscription streaming service app. This primarily means smartphones and tablets, no TVs, no game systems, or streaming sticks. One of their big selling points is the “turnstyle,” meaning when you flip your camera one way or the other it actually changes what you can see on the screen. The shows and movies are shot in a way to look good in both landscape and portrait mode. Viewers can toggle back and forth to either of these screens literally instantly. No one in the history of streaming services has done this before and it is now a new way to watch your favorite shows.

Who Owns Quibi?

Jeffrey Katzenberg is the founder & chairman of the Quibi platform. Meg Whitman, also known as the former eBay and Hewlett-Packard Boss, now serves as the chief executive officer of Quibi. The app has 12 other individuals with all different titles that contribute to growing the Quibi platform.

Categories of Quibi

The Quibi app is divided into three major categories: movies in chapters, unscripted & documentaries, and daily essentials. “Chapters” is what Quibi refers to what we all know as episodes. Many of the projects will run between two and two and a half hours each season, and divided into 12 to 14 daily episodes. Some of the shows will have multiple seasons. The next category is “Unscripted and Docs” which is where reality show, game shows, and documentaries come in. The third and last category is called “Daily Essentials” which is news programming dedicated to many aspects of news including, but not limited to politics, entertainment, and lifestyle content.

How Much does Quibi cost?

Quibi gives a 90 day free trial to anyone who signs up for the service in April. The service can also be free to T-Mobile subscribers with a Magneta Plan or a grandfathered ONE plan with at least two lines of service. This way Quibi gives anyone under this plan a full year of the ad supported service for free. Besides that, there are two forms of payment options, one being $5 per month with commercials. The other option is $8 per month with out commercials.

Who Is the Target Audience for Quibi?

The service is targeted towards adults ages 18 and up but very interested in grabbing the attention of people between the ages of 25-35 years old. Quibi is aimed at the millennials and Generation Z viewers, along with some younger members of Gen X. In a recent interview Jeffrey Katzenberg explains, “We are not kids, we are not family. Some day, maybe we will be that, but we’re not tackling that going in, because it’s just a whole other audience and a whole completely different type of content and programming, and we frankly don’t have the bandwidth to try and be all things to all people.”

What Stars Can Be Seen on the Quibi App?

Quibi has a lot of star power within the app. Subscribers can catch Chance the Rapper hosting a new series of Punk’d and Chrissy Tegan hosting a court show called “Crissy’s Court.” Liam Hemsworth and Sophie Turner are also on the app in a scripted drama called “Most Dangerous Game.” Lebron James can be seen in the feel good documentary, “I Promise.” Then you have Jennifer Lopez who can be seen in “Thanks a Million.” Rapper Offset explores the world of cars in “Skrrt with Offset.” There are many celebrities showing their face on the new mobile streaming service with even many more to watch during your free time.
