In recent years a new holiday has progressively overshadowed Thanksgiving year by year. It used to be households all over America would cook a ton of food, catch up with family and good friends, maybe watch some football until they passed out on the couch.
In recent years however, more and more people are going to bed early not due to tryptophan but to be up before dawn to get their spot in line for their preferred Black Friday Sale. Traditionalists have made it known their hatred of shoppings encroachment on this national day of thankfulness and big retail is listening.
In 2020, the year of the whole world closing down, many major retail chains are going to be closed on the day after Thanksgiving, aka Black Friday 2020.
Black Friday 2020 is not cancelled, but it will not be as great of a spectacle as it has been in previous years.
Stores already announcing they will not be open for Thanksgiving and or Black Friday include:
- Walmart
- Sam’s Club
- Best Buy
- Kohl’s
- Dick’s Sporting Goods
- TJ Maxx
- JC Penney
- Bed Bath & Beyond
- Office Depot
If your inner shopaholic is trembling trying to figure out what you will do without the Black Friday sales at these places, don’t worry. Just because they are not open for Black Friday doesn’t mean that they won’t be slashing prices and having big sales to move their merchandise.
Target put out a press release that stated:
“Our biggest holiday deals will be available earlier than ever, so you can shop safely and conveniently without worrying about missing out on deals that usually come later in the season. Starting in October and continuing through the season, you’ll find Target’s lowest prices of the year on items in stores and online.”
Target’s official statement makes it seem like they not only want to make people happy by not ripping employees away from family gatherings, but also making sure to keep “COVID-19 precautions” a priority, all while still unloading a TON of merchandise for the holidays.
If you are wondering what to expect in the way of deals this year, GameSpot had an article saying they predict you might see big sales on the Xbox One and PS4 to help places clear inventory and make room for the new Xbox Series X and PS5 (next to no chance on big deals on next generation consoles though).
Many online blogs and retail experts are anticipating the majority of the deals this year to come as virtual offerings to help the retailers sell merchandise, but also limit crowds of people in stores to limit the spread of COVID-19. Amazon has also moved its annual Prime Day to October 5th which could also influence their mark downs on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.
There is still a lot of time for more stores to also close down or go harder on their Black Friday sales hoping to pick up the people who normally would be going to the closed stores. Stay tuned as we update this article to keep you updated on whether your favorite retailer will be opening or closing this coming Black Friday 2020!
