The NBA is home to the greatest basketball players in the world. The league showcases athletes on a daily basis that leave us in awe of their high-flying jumping ability, wizard-like ball handling skills, and marksmanship with their three point shooting. While we look forward to this each night, fans have also increasingly grown an interest in what NBA players wear to games.
This was not always the case as players in the past were ordered to wear suits and business attire. Former NBA MVP Allen Iverson created this order, as his influence combined with his baggy clothes and flashy jewelry inspired the league to create a NBA dress code in 2005. Since then, players across the league regularly cause jaw dropping moments (sometimes in a bad way) with their fashion and eagerness to establish trends.
There have been certain players around the NBA that have grabbed the attention of numerous fans through their style. Certain examples include PJ Tucker who has been called “The Sneaker King” through his countless number of shoes and his act of wearing some of the rarest sneakers during games.
Other players include Chris Paul, who uses his style to represent the African American community. His outfits often showcase HBCU schools from Texas Southern, to Livingstone, to Alabama A&M. Another fashionista in the NBA is Lakers guard Russell Westbrook. Westbrook has spent years coming up with the most outlandish outfits. Whether it has been wearing a kilt or staying true to his LA roots, Westbrook is definitely a household name when it comes to NBA fashion.
But interestingly enough, none of these players can take away the title of best dressed NBA player from up and coming OKC star Shai-Gilgeous Alexander.
In his fourth season, Alexander has been gaining respect around the league as a dangerous scorer that can terrorize defensive schemes. Not only does he shine on the court, but his off-court swag is second to none. During an interview for GQ, Alexander was asked when he got into creating his own style, “I’ve always been into clothes. I’ve always liked dressing up as a kid,” Alexander said. “It comes from my parents—they always made sure we’d look proper when we left the house and that we met the standard they tried to uphold.”
Alexander has a keen ability to match various brands to display colors in his favor while maintaining a strong and elegant look. Off-White, Louis Vuitton, Supreme, and Kapital (Japanese Brand) are some examples of the high end brands that Alexander likes to pair with his rare vintage t-shirts and denim outfits.
Personally, what I think makes Alexander stand out from other NBA players is that he can put certain outfits together without going to the extreme and looking like a try-hard. A lot of players seek fashion uniqueness with different forms of apparel that you do not see often, but Alexander creates looks that are simple, yet still leaves you wondering on how exactly he was able to come up with such a sleek and fashionable look. ♦
