Ralph Lauren Makes History as First Fashion Designer Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom

Ralph Lauren, the iconic American designer whose classic, preppy styles have become a hallmark of East Coast elegance, has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

On Saturday afternoon, President Joe Biden presented Lauren with the nation’s highest civilian honor in recognition of his impact on both fashion and philanthropy.

Lauren is the first fashion designer to receive this distinction. Past recipients include civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., poet Maya Angelou, tennis legend Billie Jean King, and even Biden himself. Distributing these awards marks one of Biden’s final official acts in office, as he aims to cement his legacy with a selection of honorees ranging from politicians to activists and military heroes.

The White House ceremony featured a star-studded honorees list, including celebrity chef José Andrés, U2’s lead singer Bono, and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.

Lauren stayed true to his signature style, appearing on stage in a sharp beige-and-black blazer, complemented by a crisp white shirt and black tie.

“Ralph Lauren turned a modest necktie business into one of America’s most recognizable brands, leaving a mark on fashion, fragrance, home décor, and more,” said a U.S. military official during the ceremony. “He has also remained a committed philanthropist, dedicating efforts to causes such as cancer research. Balancing tradition with innovation, Ralph Lauren embodies the creativity and ambition that define our nation.”
