Basketball legend Kobe Bryant and Daughter Gianna tragically passed away early this year on January 26th in a fatal helicopter crash. The passing of Kobe and his daughter Gianna made headlines worldwide as Kobe’s legacy impacted the lives of millions.
In an attempt to keep that legacy alive, Orange County, California has just declared August 24th “Kobe Brynat Day” across the county. At the time of his passing, Kobe Bryant was a resident of Newport Beach, CA where his now widowed wife Vanessa Bryant and daughters Natalia, Capri, and Bianka still live today.
Orange County voted today (August 12, 2020) to declare August 24 as “Kobe Bryant Day” across the county.
Orange County Board Chairwoman, Michelle Steel, mentioned to NBC LA that they selected August 24th for Kobe Bryant Day because he wore jersey number #24 during his career and it was one day after his birthday which lies on August 23rd.
Orange County Supervisor Don Wagner, said in regards to the commemoration of Kobe Bryant Day;
“Kobe Bryant’s life, like each one of us who ever lived, presents moments to celebrate and to condemn…Kobe, like all of us, faced challenges, challenges of his own making and challenges thrown at him by life, that he overcame. Today, we celebrate the effort in overcoming those challenges.”
