On February 2, 2023 Netflix made a lot of its paying users very angry when it revealed on its website’s Terms of Service page it would be cracking down on password sharing with a verification system. The verification would consists of the following:
“To ensure uninterrupted access to Netflix, connect to the Wi-Fi at your primary location, open the Netflix app or website, and watch something at least once every 31 days.”
That means if you were away from the primary account owner’s primary location for more than 31 days you would not be able to login and be locked out. This immediately caused an uproar amongst subscribers.
Netflix became a trending topic on many social media platforms once the news broke out and many users threatened to end their Netflix subscription. Fast forward 24 hours after the revelation and it seems like Netflix got cold feet or according to a Netflix spokesperson, made an error.
“For a brief time yesterday, a help center article containing information that is only applicable to Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, went live in other countries,” a Netflix spokesperson said.
So, that means for the time being Netflix will not be cracking down on password sharing unless you live in Chile, Costa Rica, or Peru.
