‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D City’, ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’, and ‘DAMN’. This past decade, these three albums have transcended the hip hop/rap community with its memorable hits and conscious rhyming about what it means to be a black man in America. The creator behind these albums, Kendrick Lamar, has turned himself into what many believe to be one of the greatest hip hop artists of all time. Not only has Lamar been one of the most influential artists of this past decade, he has also become known as one of the most mysterious.
After DAMN’s release in 2017, it has become a rare occurrence for Lamar to appear in the media. Other than a feature on Busta Rhymes’ “Look Over Your Shoulder”, Lamar stayed silent while the world experienced traumatic things, the most notable being the COVID-19 pandemic and the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, both coming from results of police brutality.
While these events were going on, Lamar’s music was able to resonate with the lives of many people, even with the albums released years prior. According to an article from DJ Booth News from 2020, the writer elaborated on how Lamar’s latest album, ‘DAMN’, was special to him as the lyrics and metaphors told a story of how he felt what was happening in the world at that particular time. This speaks volumes to Lamar’s ability as an artist. His writing and storytelling captivates fans of many backgrounds to relate to his music.
After disappearing from the scene, Lamar suddenly came back to the masses in August of 2021 as a feature on his cousin and fellow artist Baby Keem’s album. The two songs are called “range brothers” and “family ties” which received a Grammy nomination. Shortly after, on September 30, 2021 it was announced that Lamar would be performing in the upcoming Super Bowl LVI in 2022.
Lamar has most recently made headlines once again as it was announced on many media outlets including Variety and Deadline that he would be teaming up with the creators of the well known comedy show ‘South Park’ to make a movie. The film’s plot involves an African American intern working for a museum as a slave re-enactor who finds out that his white girlfriend’s ancestors once owned his ancestors as slaves. The concept of this upcoming film seems outrageous, but if Lamar can make people think with his music, his directing will definitely be able to translate to the screen as well.
So with all this happening, will Lamar release his long-awaited album that many have been looking forward to this year? In all honesty, it could happen.
Typically when musical artists are promoting themselves on different platforms, it is most likely that an album is soon on its way. For example, rap artist Cordae just performed a freestyle on the LA Leakers Youtube channel to promote his album. Two days later Cordae’s new ‘From A Bird’s Eye View’ album dropped. Even though Lamar’s brand is on a much larger scale, I think it is safe to say that with all that Lamar has going on, new music can finally be on the way in 2022.
