Fredrick Jamel Tipton aka Freddie Gibbs was born June 14, 1982 in Gary, Indiana. He lived far from an ideal childhood growing up. He was used to seeing pimps, hookers, and crack houses all around his neighborhood. When he first heard rap music and the discussion of these topics, he fell in love with the art form. After realizing he couldn’t sustain a life of crime he focused on a career in rap. That focus has taken him all over the world and has even got him a Grammy nomination.

Recovering Drug Addict

Freddie was a frequent drinker as well as weed smoke and after getting involved with a crowd that was abusing prescriptions, he too became addicted. After he realized that he had a problem he was able to kick the habit and become an advocate for people to “avoid being high all the time.”

Former Drug Dealer

Freddie Gibbs was expelled from Ball State University and not knowing how he would pay the bills he began to sell drugs. It is unknown how deep into this life he actually got, but he was inspired by his successful family members to not make it a full time career and to continue to improve his rap career.

Meaning Behind Piñata Album Name

On March 18, 2014 Freddie Gibbs released a collaborative album with producer Madlib. The album featured high profile names like Raekwon, Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown, Scarface, Ab-Soul, Casey Veggies, and Mac Miller. What you might not know is that the title for this album was inspired by Freddie’s favorite way to transport drugs… in a piñata!



Accused of Sexual Assault

Freddie Gibbs found himself in a bit of trouble while in Austria. A woman accused him of sexual assault and he ended up spending four months in prison before the charges were eventually dropped.  A short trial concluded that they did not have enough evidence to prove he had sex or spiked the lady’s drinks like he was accused.

Baby Mama Drama

Freddie once allowed Raven Tatum, the mother of his son, to move into his garage after a flood in her home. After an altercation involving her moving stuff into her son’s room, she vandalized his car with a knife and caused Freddie to file for a restraining order.

Wrote Most of Bandana in Prison

Freddie managed to make the most out of his time in a French prison and managed to write most of the songs to his album Bandana while in there. Upon his release, he refined and recorded the songs he wrote and it became one of his most successful albums.

Meaning Behind ESGN

ESGN is the name of Freddie’s independent record label and his 2013 album. But what does ESGN stand for? In case you didn’t know, ESGN stands for “Evil Seeds Grow Naturally.”
