How to Check the Status of My Stimulus Check

On April 15, 2020, the first wave of the coronavirus (COVID-19) relief stimulus checks were sent out by the department of U.S. Treasury. While many Americans received their stimulus checks, most people did not. If you are one of the millions of Americans still waiting on your $1200, this article will provide a brief outline on when you should be receiving your stimulus check and the underlying reasons why you haven’t already received it if that is indeed the case for you. Whether you need the money to shop at the ongoing 80% off sitewide sale going on at Fashion Nova, or more serious issues such as rent/mortgage, it is important you receive the money the government owes you.

What is a Coronavirus (COVID-19) Stimulus Check?

If you hadn’t heard the news or are still unaware of what exactly these stimulus checks are, lets provide a brief explanation. As you know, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected millions of lives around the world. In the United States, there has been over 34,000 reported deaths and over 20 million individuals have filed for unemployment since the quarantine shutdown started as a cause of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To relief individuals facing economic hardships as a cause of the coronavirus, The CARES Act ($2.2 trillion stimulus package), was signed into law by President Donald Trump on March 27, 2020. As a part of the CARES Act, Americans with a social security number who are not considered a dependent will receive payments of up to $1,200.

Why Haven’t I Received My Stimulus Check?

If you are reading this article, it is most likely because you haven’t received your stimulus check. Why haven’t you received it yet? Well it was recently reported there was a number of glitches with the IRS in the first wave of checks there sent out.

One of the glitches was the lack of direct deposit information. Several million people who filed their taxes via a tax preparer like H&R Block, TurboTax and other services were unable to get their payments because the IRS did not have their direct deposit information on file according to the Treasury.

When Will I Receive My Stimulus Check?

The determining factor of when you will receive your stimulus check all depends on whether the IRS has your direct deposit information on file. If indeed the IRS has your direct deposit information on file, the treasury will use that information to automatically deposit your stimulus check into your bank account. The Treasury Department expects that over 80 million Americans will receive their payments via direct deposit this week so keep an eye out on your banking app.

Now if you don’t use direct deposit or have never provided it to the IRS, your wait time can be much, much longer. If you have no direct deposit information on file, you will be receiving a paper check in the mail. A Treasury spokesperson confessed to TIME that physical checks will not all be sent out at once and will be mailed over the next several weeks. At this rate, it could potentially take up to five months for everyone to get their physical stimulus checks in the mail.

How Do I Check the Status of My Stimulus Check?

If you would like to check the status of YOUR stimulus check, the IRS has rolled out a feature on the official IRS site to do so. The “Get My Payment” tool is highlighted on the home page of the irs.gov website that will provide the status of your stimulus check. The tool has been received with mixed reviews as it has currently worked for some, but not for others.
