Five Facts to Know About the PlayStation 5

PlayStation 5 Facts

There is still a lot of speculation on the internet about the new PlayStation 5 console, but we were able to find at least five facts you should know about the upcoming PlayStation 5 release. Let’s go over a few key details of the PlayStation 5 you are dying to know:

Price

The price is still undetermined, but PC Mag’s Matthew Humphries reported in February 2020 that production costs for the PlayStation 5 were $450. He credited the costs to Sony’s decision to use higher quality parts. Many online blogs estimate the cost of the console will be around $500 but as of today (5/14/20) there has been no official price or release date. It is rumored to be released for the”Holiday Season of 2020”. We’ve seen reports say that the coronavirus pandemic will not effect production of the console but it is too hard to know for sure.

Hardware

Looking at the specs that Sony posted in their Playstation Blog, it would appear that the PlayStation 5 could keep up with or surpass a premium gaming PC. It will have an 8 core x86-64 AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU. It will also house a AMD Radeon RDNA 2 graphics engine, 16GB of GDDR6 RAM, 825GB SSD capable of a 5.5GB/s read bandwidth, and game discs will be 100GB Ultra HD Blu-Ray. With that kind of power, it gives game developers tremendous possibilities to create some EPIC games. Tim Sweeney, the founder of Epic Games was quoted saying, “ Sony has a massive, massive increase in graphics performance compared to previous generations. But Sony’s made another breakthrough that in many ways is more fundamental, which is a multi-order magnitude increase in storage bandwidth and reduction in storage latency.”

New Controller

The first noticeable difference is in the name. The PlayStation controller lineage has always been the DualShock family but will now be called the DualSense. It will feature a two toned design, a first in PlayStation history. If that isn’t what gets you excited, perhaps the haptic feedback, the technology that creates all the powerful sensations in your hands while playing will. Just like the console itself, there is no firm price yet available for the controller. Most online speculation is that the new controller will be comparably priced with the current controllers. Backwards Compatibility

Will the PlayStation 5 be backwards compatible? Short answer is yes, but that is not the whole story. The console will be able to play a select few PS4 games but will not play them all nor any previous platform. We haven’t found a verified list of what games will posses backwards compatibility, but we’ve seen speculation of them being the top 100 selling games from the PlayStation 4 catalog.

VR Compatibility

Current PSVR headsets will work with the PlayStation 5 upon its release. With a rumored PSVR 2 on the way as well it would be fair to assume they are planning to make the two integrate well with each other.

We will continue to keep you up to date on all of the big news surrounding the release, any changes to the console, as well as what game developers are doing to utilize the powerful new hardware of the PlayStation 5.
