Disney’s ‘Snow White’ Trailer Sparks Backlash Online

Disney’s upcoming Snow White remake is facing increasing backlash online.

The official trailer for the live-action version of Disney’s classic princess tale was released less than a week ago and has already accumulated over 600,000 dislikes on YouTube. This trend of negative feedback raises concerns for the film’s future.

Starring Rachel Zegler, who made a name for herself in movies like Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Disney’s live-action Snow White aims to introduce the story to a new generation of fans with a fresh take on the original tale.

Zegler stars opposite Gal Gadot’s Evil Queen in a visually dynamic film that incorporates CGI to differentiate it from the classic 1937 version. While the film promises to be a treat for longtime Disney fans, it has faced criticism from the start, partly due to comments made by Zegler herself.

The newest trailer provides a glimpse at what to expect from the Snow White remake, which features a CGI-heavy world and characters. While not necessarily bad, this visual approach contrasts sharply with the hand-drawn style of the original.

Online reactions have been vocal, with over 610,000 likes on YouTube compared to only 25,000 positive ratings to date. The trailer has also faced significant criticism and dislikes, which has been alarming given that Disney reportedly invested over $250 million in the film.

Zegler was first announced as Snow White in 2022, a casting decision that sparked controversy. The actress faced backlash for wanting to portray a more modern Snow White, emphasizing feminine leadership over dreams of true love. Zegler argued that this updated version of Snow White isn’t about being saved by the prince, but rather about becoming the leader she aspires to be.

“I just mean that it’s no longer 1937…We absolutely wrote a Snow White that… she’s not going to be saved by the prince, and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love; she’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be,” said Zegler.

This controversy and negative press intensified earlier this year when fans got a first look at the film in a teaser trailer, which received over 300,000 dislikes. Despite the internet’s often harsh reception, these numbers are worrisome for a film whose release was delayed from March 2024 to March 2025 due to reshoots.

Disney’s Snow White remake will now arrive in theaters on March 21, 2025. Check out the trailer for yourself below!
