Streetwear clothing brand Chinatown Market is changing its name. Amid growing claims of discrimination against the Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders community, Chinatown Market has publicly issued a statement via its official Instagram account on the need to change the brand’s name.
Chinatown Market is known for their bootleg-inspired designs. Its name has received recent criticism for encouraging the stereotype that “Chinatown” in fact means bootleg. As part of its name change, the brand will be donating proceeds from remaining Chinatown Market merchandise to non-profit Asian American organizations.
A new name has not been selected and the brand plans to announce its new name in the coming months. Check out Chinatown’s Market official public name change statement below.
