Chico State has just officially announced there will be no live in-person commencement ceremony for the class of 2020. In an official statement, California State University, Chico has declared “in response to the continued uncertainty of COVID-19, Chico State’s Commencement ceremonies will be held virtually on Friday, May 15.”
For students that wish to participate in the virtual ceremony, April 20 is the deadline to submit their name to have a slide with their name read during the virtual commencement. April 30 is the deadline to have a slide submitted if you choose to not have your name read. If students wish to participate in a live in-person commencement ceremony, it will have to be at next years graduation ceremony with class of 2021. Many Chico State students are outraged at the announcement. Below are some of the sentiments students have shared via social media:
This is the most absurd, inconsiderate, disappointing, and hurtful thing that Chico State could have done for their graduates. I hope you guys carefully reconsider this senseless act. https://t.co/7luJgHZ4rk

As a graduating graduate student myself from a school within the CSU system (California State University, Dominguez Hills), I find this very disappointing. Lets hope universities across California and the world do not take Chico States’ approach as commencement is the crowning moment of many students’ lives. Commencement is a time where students can celebrate with their friends and family the culmination of all of their hard work. Chico State just took away this rewarding moment from the student of class of 2020.
