Why Bruno Mars Doesn’t Do Much Interviews or Press

Bruno Mars Does Not Do Press

You know him from his 5’5” stature, perfectly coiffed hair, signature sunglasses and hits like “Uptown Funk” and “24K Magic”— Bruno Mars is one of the biggest names in pop.

But despite being one of the biggest musicians of our time, Bruno rarely does interviews or any kind of press or scheduled paparazzi meets as celebrities of his caliber often do.

Instead Mars prefers to let his catchy songs and smooth choreography do all the work, keeping press and interviews to a minimum.

Simply put, Bruno Mars avoids press because he cares too much about his music.

“I just wanna do music. It could get boring for people,” said Mars to Zane Lowe on Beats 1. “That’s it— then I wanna go home, throw on some Netflix and live a life.”

Bruno Mars was born Peter Gene Hernandez in Honolulu, Hawaii, to a Puerto Rican father and Filipino mother, who were professional musicians. At the age of four, Mars joined the family band called the “The Love Notes.”

He performed as “Little Elvis” and learned how to capture an audience on stage from a young age. Around age 11, his parents divorced. Performing as a family ceased. Mars, however, continued to pursue music.

The “Doo-Wops and Hooligans” singer would go on to release four studio albums, perform at two Super Bowl halftime shows and earn 15 Grammys. His success, however, does not make him immune to bad press.

In 2010, after a performance at the MTV Video Music Awards alongside B.o.B, Bruno Mars was arrested at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel and Casino for cocaine possession.

Mars pleaded guilty to cocaine possession and after successfully meeting the terms of his probation, Mars’ record was wiped clean in 2013.

Regarding his Las Vegas incident, “I’m 24 years old. I’m, you know, drinking way more than I’m supposed to be drinking and it was so early in my career and I always say that I think it had to happen,” said Mars on 60 Minutes. “That was the reality check I needed and I’m— I promised myself that that, you know, you ain’t never gonna read that about me again.”

He’s kept that promise and made sure his music makes the headlines.

New Bruno Mars interviews are rare when they’re not centered around an upcoming album or the success of a recently released project such as his Silk Sonic collab with Anderson .Paak.

Anything else about Bruno Mars remains pretty quiet, though, it’s not hard to imagine his life. Mars is so open about his Cadillac, extravagant trips and designer drip in his songs.

Bruno Mars has too much love for his craft to know that it’s his music that makes him successful not the amount of press he gets.

“I don’t wanna be known for no scandal or controversy,” he told Zane Lowe. “I wanna be the guy who brings joy in your life through music.”
