Artist Spotlight: Reyna Noriega

Reyna Noriega interview

Reyna Noriega Studios LLC

Three years ago, she was a full time high school art teacher until she finally decided to bet on herself and pursue her art full time. Today, she is rising artist whose art has been featured on magazine covers such as world renown The New Yorker and is rapidly growing her name and work in the art industry.

We were lucky enough to interview 28-year-old Reyna Noriega and ask her about her life-changing decision as well as inspiration and future ambitions.

How long have you been into art and painting?

Reyna: I’ve been creating for about 12 years now.

When did you decide you wanted to start painting?

Reyna: I loved art as a kid, and enjoyed watching my dad create but I didn’t really get into it until I took an art class in high school. From there I picked up photography and painting and fell in love with it.

Can you remember the first painting you did?

Reyna: It was a painting of my niece who was a baby at the time. She was the subject of a lot of my first works, she was new to the family and I was new to painting so that joy and excitement merged.

What encouraged you to start painting full time?

Reyna: It was a dream I had and overtime I just did what I could to prepare to make it a reality. I saved money, forged alliances in the art world, read a lot of books, and did a lot of research. I did anything I could to learn and stay inspired.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Reyna: My inspiration comes from a need to surround myself with visuals of all the things that keep me centered and feeling full and uplifted as a woman. Things that bring me joy and peace as well as questions that I have about our experiences as human. I put a lot of who I am and what I like into the subjects of my drawings and paintings, my love for color, travel, and an abundance of joy.

How would you describe your painting style?

Reyna: Modern minimalist portraiture.

What is the hardest thing about painting?

Reyna: It used to be finding and maintaining inspiration but I think since I’ve learned to look within and have more sustainable self care and mental health practices it’s been much easier to be in a constant flow where creating feels natural, or when I can rest if I’m not feeling it.

What can we expect from your future paintings?

Reyna: Expect to see an evolution, I am excited to grow and try new things and techniques. As I evolve, naturally my style will too.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

Reyna: Helping other creatives start their careers, writing more, creating more, leaving whatever impact I can.

What advice would you give to aspiring painters and artists that are looking to take the same leap of faith as you did?

Reyna: I would tell them that it is not much of a leap at all. It is a decision, and then comes preparation, and then building. They need to be prepared to believe in themselves and put in the work and then allow themselves the time to grow day by day. Nothing will happen overnight. Even my decision to go full time with my art was not a leap, it was a goal, and then a plan and so when the opportunity strikes I knew I was ready. ♦
