The first half was dominated by Argentina after going up 2-0 with a questionable penalty. However, France rallied back by good coaching and a vibrant Randal Kolo Muani who injected new life to the French. By the end of regulation time, both squads had it all tied up at 2-2.
During extra time, Argentina scored first then France tied it again to end regulation with a 3-3 score and force the game into penalties. Argentina won the penalty shootout 4-2 giving Argentina their first World Cup win since 1986 and Lionel Messi his first World Cup win ever.
