The viral AI-generated Drake and The Weeknd song “Heart on My Sleeve” has been one of the most popular and talked about songs of the year.
The song was first released April 4, 2023 and was written and produced by TikTok user ghostwriter977. Upon its release the song went viral and gathered 600,000 streams on Spotify, 275,000 views on YouTube, and 15 million views on TikTok before being taken down.
Ghostwriter977 submitted the song for ‘Best Rap Song’ and ‘Song of the Year’ for the 2024 Grammys and initially received support from Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. as he stated the song was “absolutely eligible because it was written by a human.”
Harvey has now backtracked his original statement and has declared the song will indeed NOT be eligible for Grammy consideration. In his latest statement Harvey declared:
“[t]his version of ‘Heart on My Sleeve’ using the AI voice modeling that sounds like Drake and The Weeknd, it’s not eligible for GRAMMY consideration…Let me be extra, extra clear: Even though it was written by a human creator, the vocals were not legally obtained, the vocals were not cleared by the label or the artists and the song is not commercially available and because of that, it’s not eligible.”
Harvey ended his statement by saying The Academy will continue to support and protect human artists and human creators.
