The original Space Jam, released in 1996, was, for many, a classic part of growing up in the ‘90s. And while this movie will forever be a classic for anyone growing up in that era, the release of Space Jam 2 may become a continuation of that legacy.
While the first Space Jam had some elements that were incredibly interesting, like the fact that the concept began as a commercial that aired a year before the movie, the new installment has some fun facts that are compelling in their own right.
LeBron James Will Be the Leading Star
LeBron James will star. As if the internet didn’t need more of a reason to argue over LeBron versus Jordan, LeBron James will be the star of this new iteration of the cult classic. Hopefully his production team is better than his Cavs supporting cast in the playoffs.
Michael Jordan MIGHT Make an Appearance
It is rumored that Michael Jordan may make an appearance. As if the LeBron/Jordan debate couldn’t get any hotter than it already is, there are rumors circulating that Jordan himself will make an appearance. This would be the first time these two would be seen directly competing. As actors in a kid’s movie, sure, but it still counts. And who knows, maybe we’ll even get to see them go 1 on 1 in the middle of the movie.
Jordan Did Not Want LeBron James as the Lead Role for Space Jam 2
Jordan didn’t want James in the lead role. When asked about the follow up to his incredibly successful movie in 2016, Jordan mentioned Blake Griffin as the current player he would want to see in a follow up movie. As if there couldn’t be any more to debate here, it will always be interesting to see how people react to Griffin versus James in the lead role.
Charles Barkley Is Not a Fan of the Movie
Charles Barkley isn’t that into it. Another point to debate in the 280-character text boxes of Twitter, Charles Barkley was quoted as saying “Space Jam 1 was amazing. We don’t need 2. Space Jam 1 was a classic. I don’t like when people try to imitate something that was already good.” So, will the new Space Jam live up to the hype? Time will tell.
Space Jam 2 Will Be Called “A New Legacy”
The official movie title will be Space Jam 2: A New Legacy. Yup, that’s on the list. There is not a whole lot known about the film yet, and this is actually an interesting title. As already mentioned by me and pretty much everyone on Twitter, there is a huge debate that has been raging for the past few years on whether LeBron can be considered the GOAT over Jordan. And this title will undoubtedly fuel that debate even further. A New Legacy could imply that Jordan is passing the torch to James in more ways than just an animated movie role.
There isn’t a lot of information available. As you can probably tell by this list, not a whole lot is known about the upcoming release. We have a date, director, some actors, etc., but there is little known other than that. So I guess buying a ticket to a premiere will be the only way to know if this stacks up against its predecessor.
