If you are a sneakerhead that did not buy into the hype of the ‘Pokemon GO’ app when it was first introduced, perhaps the new ‘Aglet’ app might convince you. Developed by a former director of future trends at Adidas (Ryan Mullins), the new Aglet app is the sneakerhead version of Pokemon GO.
The plot to the new Aglet app is much like that of Pokemon GO, you walk around your city in real life collecting currency to buy items only instead of Pokemon…you will be collecting hard to find sneakers. Aglet plays on the frustration the difficulty sneakerheads face trying to purchase their favorite sneakers. Since many of you can’t get them in real life, Aglet will now provide the opportunity to get them digitally.
The app has a variety of real life sneakerhead traditions. Just like how you fix up your sneakers in real life whenever they need some cleaning and maintenance, the app also provides sneaker reparations via “deadstock” stations which fix up your sneakers to get them looking new again.
While the focus of Aglet is for users to build their digital sneaker collection, the app does indeed have the capability to link actual sneaker collecting and buying to in-game app events in the future. The app is beautifully designed with catchy illustrations by Kickposters founder, Dan Freebairn.
Founder Ryan Mollins says of the app, “Given that we take an L on like 99% of the sneakers we’re going after, we decided that a game for virtual sneakers is the remedy….The idea is to build a “game layer” on top of the sneaker industry.”
