The two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks is about to release his debut novel, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, on May 9 next year. The story centers around the opening of a movie that is a colossal, star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film and involves a timeline from the 1940s to the present day.
The book publisher, Penguin Random House, explained, “Part One of this story takes place in 1947. Returning from the war, a troubled soldier meets his talented five-year-old nephew, leaves an indelible impression, and then disappears for twenty-three years.”
To enhance the audience’s reading experience, the actor also created three comic books that are crucial to the story. It’s because the novel narrates how the nephew grows up to draw comic books in 1970, making his uncle into one of his characters. These are the books that are turned into big-budget superhero movies.
In another article about his upcoming book release, Hanks claimed, “The source for a movie can go back as many years as [is] in history. A story turns on a single moment in the life of someone, then all the anecdotes of the current day magnify that moment,” He added. “Going back to 1947 makes sense, as would have starting in, say, 1559. Human yearning has proven to be timeless.”
But what makes his first novel more interesting is that Hanks shared how the story was based on his personal experiences. He said, “Every character in the book does something I’ve experienced while making a movie, as well as discovered a philosophy or learned an important lesson. Even the foolish moments are some kind of stunt I’ve pulled or [a] mistake I’ve survived.” Because of this, the novel is close to the actor as it showcases the important lessons he learned from his Hollywood experiences.
Hank’s Writing Career
Although it’s the actor’s first novel, it’s not his first time dabbling into the world of writing. Hanks previously wrote a collection of short stories in 2017 called Uncommon Type, which sold over 234,000 copies in the United Kingdom alone. All of the 17 short stories included in the book feature a different antique manual typewriter, exhibiting the actor’s love for vintage typewriters.
In fact, what most people don’t know about Tom Hanks is his interesting side hobby of collecting typewriters. Today, Hank’s collection contains around 120 typewriter examples. When Hanks received a letter from a typewriter repairman thanking the actor for advocating on behalf of the aging technology, Hanks sent the repairman a 1940s Remington Noiseless. It’s also all thanks to his typewriter that he created his first upcoming novel. The actor wrote on an Instagram post that the book resulted from “one smoking hot typewriter.”
Hank’s Hollywood Career
Throughout his illustrious career, Hanks won two Oscars for his outstanding performances. First is for his role in the 1994’s film Forrest Gump and the 1993’s movie Philadelphia. Currently, the actor will be starring in the upcoming Elvis biopic directed by Baz Luhrmann. In the film, Tom Hanks portrays the character of Colonel Tom Parker, who was Elvis’ manager. To faithfully play the part, the actor revealed that he got a bald haircut for the movie during his guest appearance at the British comedy chat show The Graham Norton Show.
