She may be based in Bogotá, Colombia, but Rüttu’s art resonates with women all over the world. Her style is certainly unique and can be summarized as sexy, aggressive, and dominant. If Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion were pin-up artists, their illustrations would probably be similar to Rüttu’s.
If you are a self-proclaimed “bad b****”, you will definitely love Alejandra Oviedo’s art. We had an opportunity to interview the talented Colombian queen on where she draws inspiration for her art as well as the difficulties of being an artist.
How long have you been into art?
Alejandra: I’ve drawn since I was a child, but I’ve been drawing for a living for the past 4 years.
Can you remember the first illustration you ever did?
Alejandra: I started to draw daily back in 2015 and mainly I made vampires, monsters, and horror stuff. Back when I was a teenager, I used to draw a lot of anime characters, mostly Dragon Ball Z and Ranma characters.
You have a unique art style. What inspired it?
Alejandra: Retro artists, vintage sleazy magazines, playboy artists, and of course, pin-up and classic horror icons.
Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
Alejandra: Well, I have a board with all ideas and characters I’d love to draw, in front of my desk and my phone gallery. Sometimes, I come up with an idea and do a fast sketch on a piece of paper or a napkin before forgetting it. I like to collect vintage magazines so that’s another big source of inspiration.
What can we expect from your future illustrations?
Alejandra: I’m constantly taking art lessons so hopefully I will be exploring and developing my style, lets see what comes out of that daily experimentation. I’d love to do some little animations and work on a couple of books maybe.
What is the hardest thing about being an artist?
Alejandra: Being an artist in a country like Colombia is hard, because sadly if you are not in a certain circle of people, there are not many chances to live off your art. Also, all arts are kinda underrated and lots of talented people are just ignored. That’s why lots of people from my country find success outside of Colombia.
What advice would you give to aspiring artists looking to reach your level of success?
Alejandra: Keep practicing all the time, learn anatomy (if you want to be a pin-up artist) and draw what makes you happy.
You have a large female fanbase. What is your message to them and what would you like them to feel when they look at your art?
Alejandra: I want every woman to feel sexy and beautiful. I love it when girls identify themselves in my drawings, that’s why I try as much as I can to draw diversity and keep studying all types of body, hair, and facial features. Some people tend to think that I’m not open to draw certain types of girls, but I’m still learning how to draw different features and produce the best results.
What are the next steps of your career?
Alejandra: I want to make books, my upcoming project is a cocktail book that I will be working on with my Patreon. Also, some new garments. Hoping next year to be in some events in other countries and that’s all for the moment. Since covid is still running around, you never know what’s going to happen. ♦
